The D&B D-U-N-S Number is a unique nine-digit identification sequence, which provides unique identifiers of single business entities, while linking corporate family structures together.

1) Eight identification digits and a check digit. A two digit prefix will be added in the future but it will not be used to calculate the check digit.
2) The Organization name is not part of the D-U-N-S number.
Display Requirements: IIIIIIIIC where all characters are the digits 0 to 9, I = an identification digit and C = the check digit. When the prefix (P) is added the display requirement will be eleven digits, PPIIIIIIIIC.
Description of organizations covered by the coding system: It is the objective of Dun and Bradstreet to allocate a D-U-N-S number to all businesses and institutions engaged in a speficic business activity.
Notes on use of the code: The D-U-N-S Number originated to facilitate the compilation of financial status reports on those involved in business transactions but it is now widely used for other purposes also. The number has world wide recognition as a means of identifying businesses and institutions.
