The Global Location Number (GLN) is used to identify any location (physical or legal) that needs to be uniquely identified.
The GLN is a 13-digit number including a check digit.
The GLN is administered by GS1. GS1 is a not-for-profit global organization dedicated to the design and implementation of global standards and solutions to improve the efficiency and visibility of supply and demand chains globally and across sectors.

Description of organizations covered by the coding system: The mission of EAN International and its member numbering organizations is to take a leading role in establishing a global multi-industry system of identification and communication for products and services based on internationally accepted and business led standards. The objective is to improve the efficiency of integrated logistics while contributing added value to partners involved, as well as to consumers. At the end of 1994,near to 300,000 companies from a very large variety of sectors of trade and industry participated in the EAN system, through membership to one of the 66 national or pluri-national numbering organizations.
Notes on use of the code: The ICD code is intended to be used as agency identifier in the UN/EDIFACT service and data segments, replacing the current codevalues maintained by the UN.

International Code Designator
EAN International, based in Brussels, and the Uniform Code Council, based in Lawrenceville, N.J., will be folded into one organization, called GS1, in 2005. The global headquarters will be in Brussels.
