GS1 acknowledges that OIDs are used extensively by some sectors and for some applications, and notes the interest expressed by some communities to refer to GS1 standard identifiers and data with OIDs.
GS1 notes that some GS1 standard identifiers and data are referred to by an OID but in an uncoordinated manner. This may lead to wrong interpretations of the actual GS1 standards.
GS1 sees the opportunity to register all GS1 relevant data under the same arc and to maintain this assignment globally.
The OID assignments under this arc will be performed upon request and managed globally by GS1 using an agreed process.
This OID has been allocated by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6 in Feb 2012 and by ITU-T SG 17 in March 2012.
